The FDA has escalated the recall of certain Quaker Oats pancake mixes, classifying it as a “Class I” recall—the most serious level—due to health risks associated with undeclared milk. The recall affects Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix, a brand that was formerly known as Aunt Jemima until 2021.
The recall was initially announced by Quaker Oats on January 14, but the FDA updated it on Thursday to reflect the severity of the situation. Class I recalls are issued when there is a high likelihood that consuming or being exposed to a product will result in serious health consequences or even death.
According to the January press release from Quaker Oats, certain two-pound boxes of the pancake mix contained undeclared milk. This is a significant concern for individuals with milk allergies or severe milk sensitivities, as consuming the product could lead to life-threatening allergic reactions.
The affected products were sold in 11 states: Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Utah, and Wisconsin. These products were available for purchase as early as November 18, 2024. Consumers should check for the UPC code 30000 65040 and the best-by date of September 12, 2025, to identify the recalled items.
Quaker Oats has assured that no allergic reactions related to this recall have been reported. However, the company emphasizes that anyone with a milk allergy or sensitivity should immediately discard the affected products.
This recall follows previous actions by Quaker Oats, including a December 2023 recall of granola bars and cereals due to potential salmonella contamination. In 2021, the company also recalled bags of Quaker Rice Crisps due to undeclared soy.
Consumers with milk allergies are strongly advised to check their pantry and discard the affected products to avoid serious health risks.
