Hewlett-Packard Enterprise and Grubhub Lead Weekly Layoff Reports; HelloFresh and Wayfair Announce Texas Location Closures
The U.S. tech industry continues to face major job losses, with companies in sectors like analytics, food delivery, and e-commerce announcing significant workforce reductions.
Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) tops this week’s list, planning to cut 2,500 jobs as part of a global downsizing over the next 18 months. While the full scope of the cuts is unclear, it is uncertain how many of the affected workers will be in the U.S., according to a CNBC report.
No full closures have been reported this week, but a few companies have announced the closure or consolidation of U.S. offices. Wayfair, the Boston-based e-commerce giant, plans to shut down its Austin, Texas, technology development center. The company will focus its efforts on other major hubs in the U.S. and Bengaluru, India. Although the total number of layoffs is estimated at 340, it’s unclear how many positions will be lost in the U.S.
Similarly, HelloFresh, a Germany-based meal kit company, will close its Grand Prairie, Texas, distribution center in mid-May. The company plans to consolidate its operations to a nearby location in Irving, Texas. This move is expected to result in the loss of 273 jobs.
Lastly, Grubhub, now owned by Wonder, announced it would cut around 500 jobs to align with its new parent company.
