Wall Street Drops as US AI Faces New Competition from China

Investors are concerned that China’s emerging AI company could challenge US AI giants, affecting stock markets.

Wall Street Reacts to China’s AI Challenge

NEW YORK — Wall Street’s leading stocks fell sharply on Monday as a new competitor from China threatens to disrupt the artificial intelligence (AI) boom that has fueled big gains for US companies.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 dropped 1.7%, heading for its worst day in over a month. Tech stocks, especially those in AI, were hit hard, with Nvidia falling 14.4%, and the Nasdaq composite dropping 2.8%.

While stocks outside the AI sector held up better, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down only 0.1% by 11:05 a.m. Eastern time. The Dow had briefly been on track for a small gain earlier in the morning.

China’s DeepSeek Unveils New AI Model

The market downturn comes after a Chinese company called DeepSeek announced it had developed an AI language model that rivals those of US giants, but at a much lower cost. DeepSeek’s app quickly rose to the top of the Apple App Store, a surprising feat given the restrictions the US has placed on Chinese access to advanced AI chips.

However, analysts remain skeptical. “It’s unclear if DeepSeek found a way to bypass the chip restrictions, and there will be questions about what chips they used,” said Dan Ives, an analyst with Wedbush Securities.

Impact on Global Markets

The news of DeepSeek’s AI model caused a ripple effect in global stock markets. In Amsterdam, chip supplier ASML lost 6.6%, while Japan’s Softbank Group saw an 8.3% drop in its stock price. On Wall Street, Constellation Energy’s stock fell 16.9% after announcing plans to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant to power Microsoft’s data centers.

The uncertainty drove investors to safer options, with bond prices rising. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note dropped to 4.54% from 4.62% late Friday.

Big Tech’s AI Growth Faces New Risks

US AI stocks, which have seen huge gains over the past few years, are facing fresh pressure. Nvidia, for example, saw its stock soar from under $20 to over $140 before Monday’s drop. Other major tech companies, such as Meta Platforms, have also benefited from the AI boom, with Meta planning to invest up to $65 billion this year in AI infrastructure.

These companies, often referred to as the “Magnificent Seven,” have become dominant forces in the market. Together, they accounted for more than half of the S&P 500’s return last year. But their size has also led to concerns about “concentration risk,” or the danger of relying too heavily on just a few stocks.

“It’s great when these stocks are rising, but it becomes riskier if there’s a disruption,” said Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management.

Looking Ahead: Possible Market Volatility

Despite Monday’s sharp market moves, Jacobsen suggested investors should avoid overreacting. “It’s possible the news from China may be overstated, leading to a reversal in market trends,” he said. “If the news is true, it could open up new investment opportunities in US AI.”

Investors will be watching closely as big tech companies like Apple, Meta, Microsoft, and Tesla report their quarterly earnings this week. The market is also paying attention to the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy meeting, though experts don’t expect weak economic data to prompt a rate cut.

Global Stock Market Movement

Elsewhere in global markets, stocks in Europe and Asia saw smaller declines. The French CAC 40 fell 0.1%, and Germany’s DAX lost 0.4%. In Asia, Shanghai stocks dipped 0.1% after a survey showed a drop in China’s export orders.

As the US AI sector faces new challenges from China, investors are weighing the future of the industry. With the ongoing competition, the AI market could see shifts that affect stock values worldwide.

Colombia Accepts US Deportation Flights to Avoid Trade War

Colombia Accepts US Deportation Flights to Avoid Trade War

President Gustavo Petro agrees to allow deported migrants on US military flights to land, easing trade tensions with the US.

A potential trade war between the US and Colombia was averted after Colombia agreed to accept US deportation flights carrying migrants. This decision came after a dispute over the treatment of deported Colombians.

The conflict began when President Gustavo Petro stopped two US military planes from landing, which were carrying Colombian migrants deported from the US. In response, the Trump administration threatened to impose heavy tariffs on Colombian goods, which would have affected trade between the two nations.

Initially, President Petro said Colombia would retaliate by imposing tariffs on US imports. However, the White House soon announced that Colombia had agreed to allow US deportation flights carrying migrants to land “without limitation or delay.” The US government considered this agreement a win for Trump’s tough immigration policies.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised the deal, emphasizing that the threat of tariffs would only be activated if Colombia failed to uphold the agreement. She also stressed that Trump expected all countries to cooperate in the deportation of illegal immigrants from the US.

The dispute escalated quickly when President Petro took to social media, criticizing the US for treating Colombian migrants unfairly. He refused to allow deportees to return in handcuffs and suggested sending Colombia’s presidential plane to bring the migrants back.

While Colombia had previously accepted US deportation flights, Petro objected to military planes being used for this purpose. His concern stemmed from reports of deportees being mistreated, including being handcuffed and restrained during flights to Brazil.

The standoff reached a peak when President Trump publicly criticized Petro’s actions on social media, accusing him of jeopardizing US national security. Trump then announced his intention to impose a 25% tariff on all Colombian goods, with the potential to raise it to 50% if Colombia did not comply within a week. He also revoked the visas of Colombian officials and imposed a travel ban.

Despite the tensions, diplomatic efforts helped ease the situation. Colombia’s Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo confirmed that the two countries had resolved the issue, and Colombia would allow the deportation flights to land. He also reiterated Colombia’s offer to send its own plane to transport the deportees.

This agreement helped avert a trade war, but the US stated that visa restrictions on Colombian officials would remain until the first deportation flight arrived in Colombia. Additionally, increased scrutiny would be applied to Colombians arriving in the US.

The diplomatic clash marks a low point in US-Colombia relations, which have historically been strong, particularly in the fight against drug trafficking. Trade between the two countries is significant, with Colombian exports to the US including oil, coffee, and flowers accounting for billions of dollars in revenue.

As tensions subside, both sides appear to have avoided significant economic consequences. However, the row highlights the importance of managing international relations to prevent disruptions in trade and diplomacy.

Why the Fight Over Costco DEI Policies Is Far from Over, According to Activist Investor

Why the Fight Over Costco DEI Policies Is Far from Over, According to Activist Investor

Ethan Peck of the National Center for Public Policy Research predicts Costco could drop DEI policies by year-end.

Although Costco shareholders rejected a proposal to challenge the company’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies on Friday, the activist investors leading the push against Costco’s “woke” practices argue the battle is not over.

Ethan Peck, deputy director of the National Center for Public Policy Research’s Free Enterprise Project (NCPR), emphasized that shareholder proposals are often met with opposition from company boards. “It’s typical for boards to oppose shareholder proposals, regardless of the issue,” Peck told Fox News Digital.

NCPR had asked Costco executives to assess the potential risks DEI policies posed to the company’s financial performance. However, Costco’s board unanimously rejected the proposal.

Costco Chairman Hamilton “Tony” James defended the company’s commitment to DEI, stating, “We owe our success to the more than 300,000 employees who serve our members every day. It is important that they all feel included and appreciated and that they transmit these values to our customers.” At the shareholder meeting, 98% of Costco shareholders voted against NCPR’s proposal.

Despite this setback, Peck believes the push for change is far from over. He predicts that Costco could follow in the footsteps of companies like Walmart, McDonald’s, and Harley-Davidson, which moved away from DEI policies after President Donald Trump’s 2016 election.

Peck also pointed to Boeing as an example, noting that the company opposed a shareholder proposal for a DEI audit just months before it abandoned DEI efforts. “Costco’s firm stance on DEI in its proxy statement may not be as significant as some think,” Peck said. “There’s still a good chance Costco will drop DEI by the end of the year.”

Costco remains one of the few major companies holding onto its DEI policies, which often include considerations of race and gender in hiring practices and employee training. The company’s board member Jeff Raikes, former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has been a vocal advocate for DEI. He has argued that businesses should “maximize” their DEI initiatives, claiming that a diverse workforce drives innovation and economic growth.

However, critics like President Trump, who has banned DEI in federal government contracts, continue to oppose such policies. In a recent speech at Davos, he called DEI efforts “discriminatory” and “absolute nonsense.”

Faith-Based Investing Grows as a Strong Alternative to ESG

Faith-Based Investing Grows as a Strong Alternative to ESG

Faith-Based Investing Sees a Surge in Popularity, Especially Post-COVID

More people are choosing faith-based investing as they align their financial decisions with their values. According to experts, this approach is gaining momentum and emerging as a strong alternative to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investing.

Will Lofland, the Head of Investments Distribution at Guide Stone, shared his insights on the growing trend during an appearance on The Big Money Show. He explained that faith-based investing has experienced significant growth, particularly over the past three years. This increase in interest mirrors the rise of ESG investing, but many are now seeking investments that reflect their religious values.

“People are becoming more intentional with their money, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. They’re realizing there are investment options that better align with their faith than mainstream strategies like ESG,” Lofland explained.

Guide Stone, a Christian financial services company established in the 1970s, has seen a noticeable rise in faith-based investments. Lofland emphasized that this growth accelerated during the pandemic, as individuals began reassessing their priorities and financial choices.

Faith-based investing allows individuals to invest in line with Christian values. Lofland mentioned that Guide Stone strives to help businesses, both secular and faith-based, implement practices that align with these principles. This includes ensuring companies treat their employees fairly, produce ethical products, and create policies that resonate with consumers.

Lofland also discussed how the adoption of faith-based investing spans different age groups. Younger investors have been quick to embrace this strategy, while baby boomers, who typically hold more wealth, are increasingly interested as well. He noted that older generations tend to favour companies with strict ethical guidelines, while younger investors are more open to supporting companies whose products have a positive societal impact.

He also addressed concerns about businesses not aligning their policies with consumer expectations. “We want to encourage companies to recognize the growing voice of consumers who care about these issues. It’s a significant voice, and it’s something that businesses need to understand,” Lofland said.

Lofland emphasized that businesses should focus on core principles and ethical practices that align with both faith-based values and consumer needs. As faith-based investing continues to rise, it presents an appealing alternative to traditional ESG investing for those looking to invest according to their beliefs.

Netflix to Increase Subscription Prices After Surging Subscriber Growth

Netflix to Increase Subscription Prices After Surging Subscriber Growth

The success of Squid Game 2 and high-profile live sports events, like the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight, drive Netflix’s record subscriber gains.

Netflix is raising its subscription prices in several countries after adding nearly 19 million new subscribers in the final months of 2024. The streaming giant announced price hikes in the US, Canada, Argentina, and Portugal. When asked about potential increases in the UK, Netflix said there were “no updates to share at this time.”

The company’s impressive growth was boosted by the success of Squid Game 2 and major live sports events, including the boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. These factors helped Netflix exceed expectations for new subscribers.

In the US, most subscription plans will see price increases, including the ad-free standard plan, which will rise from $15.49 to $17.99 per month. The ad-supported plan will also increase by $1, bringing the cost to $7.99. This is Netflix’s second price hike in the US, following a similar increase in October 2023.

“We occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so we can reinvest in improving Netflix,” the company explained.

In total, Netflix finished the year with over 300 million subscribers, far exceeding its forecast of 9.6 million new sign-ups between October and December. Going forward, Netflix will no longer report quarterly subscriber growth, instead focusing on key milestones in paid memberships.

Along with Squid Game 2 and the Paul vs Tyson fight, Netflix also made waves by streaming two NFL games on Christmas Day. The platform has committed to broadcasting more live events, including WWE wrestling and the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Technology analyst Paolo Pescatore noted, “Netflix is leveraging its stronger, more diverse content lineup to adjust prices, putting it ahead of competitors.”

Netflix’s net profit for the October to December period more than doubled to $1.8 billion, while sales rose from $8.8 billion to $10.2 billion.

Trump’s Cancer Detection AI Project Boosted by Oracle’s Larry Ellison

The $100 billion initiative aims to revolutionize cancer detection and treatment with AI technology.

Oracle founder Larry Ellison revealed that the ambitious AI project Stargate is playing a key role in the development of an innovative cancer vaccine. Announced this week by President Donald Trump, the project brings together Oracle, Open AI, and SoftBank to create powerful data centers across the U.S., designed to advance artificial intelligence capabilities.

Ellison, who also serves as Oracle’s chief technology officer, explained that the project is already contributing to ground breaking advancements in cancer detection and treatment. Using the tools provided by Open AI and SoftBank, Ellison and his team are working on a solution that could detect cancer early through a simple blood test. AI will then analyse the test results to identify serious cancers that could threaten a person’s health.

“By using AI, we can sequence the cancer tumour’s genes and develop a personalized mRNA vaccine for the patient,” Ellison said during a White House news conference with Trump. “In just 48 hours, AI can help create a customized vaccine that could target an individual’s specific cancer.”

This cancer detection AI project holds incredible potential. Early detection combined with personalized vaccines could change the way cancer is treated, offering hope for faster and more precise interventions.

The project’s initial investment stands at $100 billion, with plans to expand to $500 billion in the coming years. The first data center will be built in Texas, with future expansion to other states. Trump called it “the largest AI infrastructure project, by far, in history.”

Before his second term, Trump was working to attract private investment in the U.S. Last month, SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son joined Trump in announcing a $100 billion investment aimed at creating 100,000 new jobs in the U.S. A White House official also revealed that post-election, Trump has secured $1 trillion in private investments for various U.S. projects.

This Cancer Detection AI Project marks a significant leap forward in the fight against cancer, harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to improve early detection and personalized treatment for patients.

Starbucks to Lay Off Corporate Workers in March: CEO Announces

Starbucks to Lay Off Corporate Workers in March: CEO Announces

Sales Struggles Lead to Job Cuts as Starbucks Focuses on Efficiency

Starbucks will be cutting corporate jobs as part of a strategy to improve sales and increase profits, CEO Brian Niccol announced. In a letter to employees, which was also shared on the company’s website, Niccol explained that the decision was necessary to make Starbucks more efficient and sustainable for the future.

Niccol, who became CEO in September, stated that while Starbucks is committed to its “Back to Starbucks” strategy to improve the customer experience, the company must also focus on internal efficiency. This will lead to layoffs in the corporate sector. The layoffs will not affect baristas or other in-store staff, nor will it impact investments in store hours.

“We are making thoughtful decisions about the future of our support organization. Unfortunately, some positions will be eliminated,” Niccol wrote. “We’ll communicate specific changes by early March.”

Although the exact number of layoffs remains unclear, Niccol emphasized the importance of transparency and wanted employees to hear about the changes directly from him.

The company has been facing challenges with lagging sales, and Niccol has made it clear that turning things around requires a return to the core values that made Starbucks successful. The “Back to Starbucks” strategy includes improvements to store design and customer experience, such as bringing back condiment bars and serving coffee in ceramic mugs.

Starbucks is also reintroducing the use of Sharpies to write customer names on cups and eliminating extra charges for customizing beverages with non-dairy milk. The company is also aiming for a four-minute wait time at cafés and has added coverage hours in over 3,000 locations.

In addition to these changes, Starbucks recently announced that it will only allow paying customers to use its restrooms and lounge areas, focusing on providing a better experience for those who are spending money in-store.

Starbucks is also enhancing its benefits for employees, including doubling its paid parental leave to 12 weeks. The company previously offered six weeks of paid time off for new parents. Starbucks is also continuing its commitment to its employees through its College Achievement Plan, which covers 100% of college tuition for eligible employees, and offering company stock to qualifying partners.

Despite recent challenges, Niccol remains optimistic about the company’s direction and praised the efforts of Starbucks employees in supporting the changes. “We have a lot of work ahead, but I’m proud of the progress we’ve made,” Niccol wrote.

Before Niccol’s arrival, Starbucks was facing pressure from unionization efforts and disappointing financial results. Niccol is working to address both of these challenges while improving profitability and creating a positive work environment. However, the company has also seen employee strikes at hundreds of stores, adding to the complexities Niccol faces in leading Starbucks forward.

By focusing on both operational efficiency and employee well-being, Starbucks aims to continue its position as a global leader in the coffee industry.

How Extreme Weather and Rising Costs Impact the 2025 Housing Market

The housing market in 2025 faces significant challenges, with extreme weather and rising home prices slowing activity across the United States. From wildfires in California to freezing temperatures in the Northeast and Midwest, these conditions have disrupted home tours, pending sales, and new listings early in the year.

Declining Homebuyer Demand

According to Redfin’s Homebuyer Demand Index, which measures home tours and buying requests, demand fell 11% in the four weeks ending January 12. This marks the lowest level since August. Pending home sales dropped 8.4% compared to the same period last year, the steepest decline since October 2023. Additionally, new listings saw a 3.6% annual decrease, the largest drop since September 2023.

Despite these challenges, active listings rose by 9.8% year over year, but this was the smallest increase in nearly 12 months.

Rising Costs Add Pressure

Nationwide, the median housing payment reached its highest level in over two months as home prices climbed 5.8% year over year. Mortgage rates also hit their highest point since May, further discouraging buyers.

AI Executives Applaud Trump’s Stargate Project: “A Huge Investment Impacting All of Humanity”

Trump Highlights $500 Billion Joint Venture with Softbank, Open AI, and Oracle

In a bold move to advance artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, President Donald Trump has announced the launch of the Stargate project, a massive joint venture involving Softbank, Open AI, and Oracle. Valued at $500 billion, this initiative aims to build data centers across the U.S., powering AI advancements that could impact numerous industries globally.

The three CEOs behind the Stargate project are calling it a transformative investment. Oracle founder Larry Ellison emphasized the project’s potential to change the future, stating, “This is a very large investment that affects all of humanity.” He pointed out that the Stargate project could lead to breakthroughs in healthcare, including vaccines for diseases like cancer and early detection systems for viruses like COVID-19.

Trump introduced the Stargate project on the first day of his second term. Speaking from the White House, he highlighted the partnership between Softbank, Open AI, and Oracle, and the project’s focus on building data centers that will support AI development in the U.S.

The Stargate project is set to revolutionize many sectors, according to Ellison. He explained that this AI-driven initiative could significantly advance medicine and other industries. “It’s a revolution in medicine. It touches us all,” he said, adding that the project’s investment would lead to personalized treatments and faster response times to health crises.

The initial investment in the Stargate project is $100 billion, with plans to increase it to $500 billion over the next four years. The first data center will be built in Texas, with plans for expansion to other states. Open AI CEO Sam Altman expressed his excitement about the project, saying, “With this investment, we can create A.I. and A.G.I. in the United States. It wouldn’t have been possible without the current leadership.”

Altman also stressed the importance of responsible AI development, acknowledging the need for careful oversight as the technology evolves. “The scale of this investment is huge, and it signals tremendous progress in the field of AI,” he said, expressing confidence that the team will navigate the challenges ahead.

Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son also highlighted the significance of large-scale investments like the Stargate project for humanity’s future. “We need big capital to make this work. This is a project for the good of humanity,” he said, aligning with Trump’s vision of ushering in a new era of innovation in the U.S.

A White House official confirmed that since the election, Trump has secured over $1 trillion in private investments for various U.S. projects, with the Stargate project standing out as a cornerstone for the nation’s technological growth.

The Stargate project is a ground breaking effort that brings together some of the largest names in technology to drive innovation and shape the future of AI. With an initial investment of $100 billion and plans for continued growth, the project is poised to have a lasting impact on healthcare, economy, and beyond.

  • Teva: Net sales totaled $22 million, up 2.3% from last year and slightly above analyst estimates of $20.94 million.
  • UGG: The brand achieved $689.90 million in sales, a 13% increase, outperforming the $628.71 million estimated.

Is Shopify Stock a Smart Buy Under $100? Here’s What You Need to Know

October 27, 2024 hottopicharbor.com Blog 4

Is Shopify Stock a Smart Buy Under $100? Here’s What You Need to Know

Shopify stock has been on a rollercoaster over recent years. Shopify shares saw a massive 400% increase during the pandemic as demand for e-commerce software and payment tools surged. But when the e-commerce boom faded, Shopify’s stock dropped nearly 90% from its peak. Over the past 12 months, however, Shopify’s stock has rebounded by 55%, though it still remains below the highs seen in 2021.

Investing in high-growth stocks like Shopify means dealing with volatility. Yet, Shopify’s core financials reveal steady improvements in growth and profitability. So, is Shopify stock a good buy at under $100?

Refocusing on Core Services
During the pandemic, Shopify had ambitious plans, such as competing with Amazon in logistics, experimenting with cryptocurrency, and acquiring a robotics company. However, Shopify later scaled back, selling its logistics division and reducing its workforce by 20%. By going back to its core products—e-commerce software and payment tools—Shopify is now strengthening its foundation. Today, its software helps businesses create and manage online stores, while its payment tools handle transactions both online and in stores. These two services have helped Shopify generate $7.7 billion in annual revenue.

Shopify’s Revenue and Profit Growth
After selling its logistics business, Shopify’s revenue grew by 25% last quarter, hitting $2 billion. This is impressive considering it grew 31% in the same quarter the previous year, suggesting that Shopify is capturing market share from competitors. By increasing prices on subscription services with minimal customer turnover, Shopify demonstrates strong customer loyalty and potential for future growth.

Efficiency has also improved. Last quarter, Shopify’s free cash flow margin rose to 16%, up from 6% a year prior. Operating margin also reached 11.8%, including stock-based compensation. For the remainder of 2024, Shopify expects revenue to grow in the mid-20% range with continued high free-cash-flow margins.

Is Shopify Stock a Good Buy Below $100?
The real question is Shopify’s valuation. While the stock has dropped 50% from its high, it still has a market cap of $100 billion, or more than 10 times its sales over the past 12 months. Estimating a 20% annual revenue growth over the next five years, Shopify’s revenue could reach around $19 billion. If its operating margin also improves to 20%, Shopify could see $3.8 billion in earnings.

In five years, this projects a price-to-earnings ratio similar to the S&P 500 today. This suggests Shopify stock may already be priced for future growth, making it less appealing below $100 for some investors.

For those looking to invest in Shopify stock, it’s essential to consider whether its current price aligns with its long-term growth potential.

Apple’s Next Big Move: How AI Could Boost Revenue and User Experience

October 27, 2024 hottopicharbor.com Blog 5

Apple’s Next Big Move: How AI Could Boost Revenue and User Experience

Apple is set to make a major move that could reshape its business once again. Since launching its first iPhone in 2007, Apple has led innovation in the smartphone market, starting with the introduction of touchscreen technology and internet access in a mobile device. Despite early competition with brands like Nokia, Apple quickly set itself apart. Fast forward to 2023, and Apple dominated smartphone sales, shipping 234.6 million iPhones and holding 20.1% of the global market.

Now, Apple is focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) to fuel its next growth phase. While Samsung entered the AI space earlier, Apple recently introduced “Apple Intelligence,” a suite of AI-powered tools designed to improve productivity and communication. With features like text summarization, intelligent voice assistance, and transcription, Apple Intelligence aims to give users more control and efficiency in their digital interactions.

Apple’s services segment, which includes iCloud, Apple Music, and Apple TV, generated $71 billion in revenue in the first nine months of 2024. Expanding Apple Intelligence to these offerings could boost this revenue even further, especially as Apple’s services have high profit margins, nearly double those of its product sales.

Analysts expect that Apple might add a subscription model to its Apple Intelligence tools, similar to Microsoft’s approach with Copilot, which charges users for access to premium AI features. If Apple charges between $10 and $20 monthly for advanced AI tools, the potential earnings could be substantial. With over 2.2 billion active Apple devices globally, and an estimated 300 million devices potentially needing upgrades, Apple is well-positioned to see increased sales and service subscriptions.

Apple Intelligence will initially be available on select models like the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and future iPhone 16 devices, as well as M1-powered iPads and Macs. As demand grows for AI-compatible devices, Apple could see a boost in both device sales and services revenue.

If even a fraction of Apple’s user base subscribes to its AI services, Apple could generate billions monthly. This would not only strengthen Apple’s current $100 billion annual services revenue but also drive the company’s overall growth. With Apple Intelligence, the company’s journey toward AI integration is just beginning, and it may pave the way for significant advances in both hardware and digital services.

OpenAI Raises $6.6B at $157B Valuation, Securing Its Position as a Global AI Leader

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has successfully raised $6.6 billion, reaching a total valuation of $157 billion. This investment round was led by Thrive Capital, making OpenAI one of the most valuable private companies in the world.

Big names such as Altimeter Capital, Fidelity, Khosla Ventures, Microsoft, Nvidia, SoftBank, and Abu Dhabi’s MGX also contributed to the round. Notably, SoftBank’s Vision Fund invested $500 million, though Apple chose not to participate at the last minute.

This funding comes at a time when OpenAI is undergoing several changes, including the departure of key employees and a shift from being a nonprofit to becoming a for-profit benefit corporation. The new funding structure considers these changes, allowing investors to reclaim their money if the transition isn’t completed within two years. It also removes the cap on returns for investors, making the deal more attractive.

OpenAI’s latest round of funding surpasses that of its competitor xAI, Elon Musk’s AI startup, which raised $6 billion in May, valuing it at $24 billion. This makes OpenAI the top player in the generative AI space globally.

By securing this funding, OpenAI continues to solidify its leadership in artificial intelligence.

Lightspeed Venture Partners Raising $7 Billion for New Funds to Invest in Top Companies

Lightspeed Venture Partners, known for investing in companies like Snap, Nest, and Stripe, is planning to raise $7 billion for three new funds. This is even more than the $6.7 billion they raised in 2022 for their previous funds.

Around 40% of this money will go to support companies they have already invested in through a special opportunity fund. The rest will likely be split between a fund for growing companies and another focused on early-stage investments in startups, according to reports.

Lightspeed Venture Partners is not the only firm raising big funds. In March, Andreessen Horowitz raised $7.2 billion, and Insight Partners is reportedly close to raising over $10 billion.

Although Lightspeed Venture Partners slowed its investments in 2023, they have been very active this year, making 75 deals so far in 2024. One of their recent investments was in New York-based Grafana Labs, where they led a $270 million funding round, valuing the company at $6 billion. Grafana Labs is known for its software that helps monitor and visualize data.

This news shows that Lightspeed Venture Partners continues to play a big role in the world of startup investments.

Mark Zuckerberg Turns Away from Politics: A Shift from Activism to Neutrality

Just over a decade ago, Zuckerberg was vocal about his political views, passionately supporting issues like immigration, social justice, and inequality. He launched philanthropic foundations and donated vast amounts of money to support his political goals, positioning himself as an advocate for change.

Now in his 40s, Zuckerberg’s approach has dramatically shifted. His experiences with political controversies, particularly in Washington, have made him cynical about politics. Both Democrats and Republicans criticized Facebook, accusing it of allowing Russian interference in elections and of either censoring or enabling political speech. As a result, Zuckerberg has become increasingly disillusioned with the political world.

According to his close circle of friends, advisers, and colleagues, Zuckerberg now prefers to avoid politics as much as possible. He has reduced his involvement in programs at his philanthropic organization, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), that might be seen as partisan. Inside Meta, he has taken steps to reduce employee activism around sensitive political issues such as abortion and racial justice.

The Fallout of Political Involvement

Zuckerberg’s involvement in politics was not always controversial. In 2013, he co-founded the advocacy group Fwd.US, which aimed to provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Later, he and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan, founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, focusing on ambitious causes like reducing incarceration and legalizing drugs. They even wrote a heartfelt letter to their newborn daughter, pledging to work toward a world without poverty or hunger.

However, the tide began to turn in 2016 when Facebook was accused of allowing Russian interference in the U.S. election. Zuckerberg and his company became embroiled in political scrutiny, and both parties turned against Meta. It became clear to Zuckerberg that his efforts to contribute to political causes were backfiring, attracting more negative attention than positive change.

From Progressivism to Neutrality

Zuckerberg’s disillusionment deepened after incidents like the 2020 protests following George Floyd’s death. His refusal to moderate comments from then-President Donald Trump led to criticism from his employees at CZI, some of whom even called for his resignation. This led Zuckerberg to rethink his involvement in political causes, scaling back the work of CZI’s Justice and Opportunity division. By 2021, he decided to stop the group’s political efforts altogether, shifting its focus to bipartisan organizations.

Zuckerberg’s disconnection from politics extended to his dealings with the U.S. government. He expressed regret in a letter to Congress, explaining that he had felt pressured by the Biden administration to censor more COVID-19 content than he was comfortable with. In his public remarks, he made it clear that he regretted some of his past political activities and had no intention of repeating them.

Behind the Scenes

Though Zuckerberg is publicly stepping away from politics, privately he has maintained some connections. He has spoken twice on the phone with former President Donald Trump, which some see as an attempt to mend a strained relationship. He has also made efforts to rebuild relationships with Republican leaders, even hiring a Republican strategist to help repair his image with conservative circles.

At the same time, Zuckerberg has distanced himself from liberal causes, refusing to let CZI focus on politically charged issues such as abortion access after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Dr. Chan reiterated this stance in a memo, clarifying that their focus would remain on science, education, and community work.

The Broader Silicon Valley Shift

Zuckerberg’s political evolution mirrors a larger trend in Silicon Valley. Tech leaders, frustrated by the increasingly contentious political landscape, are choosing neutrality. While some, like Elon Musk, have aligned themselves with conservative politics, others, like Zuckerberg, are retreating from political engagement altogether. His libertarian views now emphasize free markets and globalism, while steering clear of far-left progressivism.

Analysis: Zuckerberg’s New Path and Its Implications

Zuckerberg’s journey from a vocal political figure to someone eager to avoid politics reflects a broader shift in Silicon Valley’s relationship with the U.S. government. His early involvement in progressive causes, like immigration reform and social justice, aligned with the liberal ideals that dominate the tech world. However, the political backlash he and Meta faced, especially after the 2016 election, marked a turning point.

One of the key factors driving Zuckerberg’s retreat from politics is the dual pressure from both political parties. On one hand, liberals criticized Facebook for not doing enough to curb hate speech and misinformation. On the other hand, conservatives accused the platform of censorship, especially during the pandemic and the 2020 election. It became clear to Zuckerberg that engaging in politics would only continue to put Meta under a microscope.

Furthermore, Zuckerberg’s personal values have shifted. Once seen as a progressive voice, he now identifies more with libertarian or “classical liberal” ideas. These beliefs emphasize free-market principles and limited government intervention, and while he still supports social justice causes, he stops short of endorsing more radical progressive movements.

From a business perspective, Zuckerberg’s political shift makes sense. Meta has faced growing scrutiny, and avoiding politics helps reduce risks. By stepping back, Zuckerberg is attempting to protect Meta from further political entanglements and rebuild its reputation.

Ultimately, Zuckerberg’s retreat from politics signals a larger trend in the tech industry. As political issues become more polarizing, tech leaders may choose to focus on business rather than becoming involved in activism. For Zuckerberg, this decision may help Meta navigate a politically charged environment, but it raises questions about the role of tech giants in shaping public policy.

In his own words, Zuckerberg believes it will take years to rebuild Meta’s reputation, but he hopes that by stepping away from politics, both he and his company can eventually recover. However, given the complex intersection of politics, technology, and public discourse, it remains to be seen whether Zuckerberg’s retreat will truly shield Meta from future political challenges.

Why Major Global Powers Fail to Prevent War in the Middle East

Why Major Global Powers Fail to Prevent War in the Middle East

For almost a year, war has raged in the Middle East. Despite efforts, the world’s biggest powers like the United States and others have not been able to stop or significantly affect the fighting. This inability highlights a world where no one country holds complete power, and conflicts are harder to control.

The Situation in Gaza and Lebanon

The United States has tried multiple times to mediate peace talks between Israel and Hamas, the militant group controlling Gaza. However, these talks, which often seem close to success, have repeatedly fallen apart. Meanwhile, efforts to stop a full-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon are ongoing but face many challenges. These efforts became even more complicated when Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s leader, was killed by Israel. This has created uncertainty, as Nasrallah was central to Hezbollah for over 30 years, and his death leaves a significant void in leadership.

Changing Power Dynamics

In the past, the United States was a major player in the Middle East, helping to broker peace deals like the 1978 Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt. But today, the world has changed. The U.S. has less influence over countries like Iran and its allies, Hezbollah and Hamas, who are involved in the fighting. Despite this, the U.S. continues to support Israel, giving it billions in military aid.

Though the U.S. has criticized Israel’s strong military response to Hamas’s attacks, including the killing of civilians in Gaza, its support for Israel remains firm. The U.S. will not abandon Israel, as their alliance is based on shared values and political considerations.

Other Global Powers

Other powerful nations like China and Russia have been mostly bystanders in this conflict. China, a major importer of Iranian oil, is not interested in playing a significant role in stopping the war. Russia, which relies on Iran for military support in its war in Ukraine, also has little incentive to intervene.

The Role of Regional Powers

Countries in the region, like Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, are also cautious. Iran is aware that going to war with Israel could endanger its regime. Egypt fears a large influx of Palestinian refugees if the conflict worsens, and Saudi Arabia wants a Palestinian state but is unwilling to go to war over it.

Qatar has supported Hamas with large sums of money over the years, some of which went toward building tunnels used by Hamas to hide and hold hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu even allowed Hamas to grow in power as a way to weaken the Palestinian Authority.

A Fragmented World

The world is witnessing a breakdown in international authority. The United Nations, where global leaders are meeting to discuss these issues, has been largely ineffective. The U.S. and Russia often veto each other’s resolutions, preventing any meaningful action.

This war has not drawn as much global attention as previous conflicts. In the past, Middle Eastern wars often caused oil prices to spike and markets to fall. Now, there seems to be a more indifferent attitude globally, despite the ongoing loss of life.

No Clear End in Sight

With no unified global response, the leaders involved—Netanyahu for Israel and Yahya Sinwar for Hamas—face no real consequences for continuing the war. Netanyahu, facing corruption charges and criticism for his handling of the conflict, might be using the war to distract from his domestic problems. Sinwar, on the other hand, holds Israeli hostages, which gives him power and leverage.

In this “age of turbulence,” as some experts call it, global institutions are struggling to keep up with the new challenges of the 21st century. Many of these organizations, like the United Nations, were created after World War II and are no longer effective in dealing with today’s problems.

The war between Israel and Gaza is a stark reminder of how the global order is shifting, and the world’s biggest powers are struggling to adapt.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney Endorses Kamala Harris for 2024, Warns About Trump’s Threat to Democracy

Former Vice President Dick Cheney Endorses Kamala Harris for 2024, Warns About Trump’s Threat to Democracy

Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, a prominent figure in Republican politics, has made a surprising announcement ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Cheney, known for his role in the Bush administration, stated he will be voting for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, citing his concerns about Donald Trump’s impact on the nation’s future.Cheney, who served as Vice President from 2001 to 2009 under President George W. Bush, issued a stern warning about Trump, calling him “the greatest threat to our republic” in U.S. history. Cheney’s statement read: “In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who poses a greater danger to our democracy than Donald Trump.” He further criticized Trump for attempting to undermine the results of the 2020 election, using lies and inciting violence to stay in power after being rejected by voters.

The former Vice President, now 83, has largely stayed out of the political spotlight since leaving office in 2009. However, in recent years, Cheney has grown more vocal about his opposition to Trump, despite being a controversial figure himself. Cheney’s tenure in the government included leadership positions at the Pentagon and in Congress, as well as his role in spearheading the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Once criticized by Democrats, Cheney has garnered newfound respect from some quarters for standing up to Trump and defending constitutional values.

In his statement, Cheney referenced the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection, emphasizing that all Americans have a duty to protect the Constitution and prioritize the country over political divisions. “That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris,” Cheney added.

This news comes on the heels of a wave of Republican figures endorsing Harris. Just weeks earlier, 238 former Republican officials who worked for past GOP leaders such as George W. Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney pledged their support for Harris. Among those endorsing Harris is Cheney’s own daughter, Liz Cheney, a former Congresswoman who has been a vocal critic of Trump and served on the January 6 investigation committee. Liz Cheney publicly endorsed Harris at an event earlier in the week, saying, “Because of the danger Donald Trump poses, I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”

This mass shift of conservative support toward Harris has made headlines, as these endorsements highlight a growing divide within the Republican Party regarding Trump’s role in its future. Many high-profile Republicans, like Cheney, are expressing concerns about Trump’s influence, with some crossing party lines to support Harris as a way of protecting democratic institutions.

With Dick Cheney’s endorsement, the list of Republicans supporting Kamala Harris continues to grow, marking an unprecedented moment in U.S. political history. The former Vice President’s warning about Trump is yet another signal of the deep concerns many conservatives share about the 2024 election and the future of American democracy.

Trump vs. Harris: Behind-the-Scenes Prep for Debate Reveals Two Distinct Approaches

Trump vs. Harris: Behind-the-Scenes Prep for Debate Reveals Two Distinct Approaches

As the much-anticipated Trump-Harris debate draws closer, both candidates are busy preparing for what could be a pivotal moment in their campaigns. However, their methods could not be more different, reflecting their distinct styles and strategies.Kamala Harris: A Structured Approach

Vice President Kamala Harris has taken an intensive, highly organized route to her debate prep. She’s staying at a hotel in Pittsburgh for five days, where her team has recreated a debate stage complete with lighting, podiums, and advisers posing as opponents. One adviser has even fully embraced the role of Donald Trump, mimicking his style, posture, and speech as if he were performing in a Hollywood film. This method-acting approach is designed to prepare Harris for the unpredictable and sometimes chaotic energy Trump brings to debates.

Harris’s team believes that the upcoming debate is a key opportunity for her to introduce herself to millions of swing voters who may not have a fully formed opinion of her yet. The goal is to showcase her presidential qualities, keeping her cool while pushing Trump to lose his temper. According to sources close to her, Harris’s main strategy is to bait Trump into one of his famously impulsive outbursts, while maintaining her composure and focusing on issues that resonate with everyday Americans.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who debated Trump in 2016, has reportedly advised Harris to avoid being baited herself. Clinton shared that when she called Trump a “Russian puppet” during their debate, he became flustered and defensive. Harris’s team hopes for a similar outcome—where Trump is rattled, and Harris remains unshaken.

Donald Trump: Policy Refresh Over Traditional Prep

On the other side, former President Donald Trump has opted for a more laid-back approach, preferring impromptu policy discussions with his close advisers rather than a rigid, scripted preparation. He is reportedly not undergoing traditional debate “prep” but rather what his team calls “policy time.” During these sessions, Trump refreshes his knowledge of key policies and topics, occasionally fielding tough questions from his advisers, including Representative Matt Gaetz and former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

Trump’s team is aware of the dangers of his aggressive debate style, particularly his tendency to interrupt opponents. This was notably a problem during his first 2020 debate against Joe Biden. His advisers are pushing for a more balanced approach, emphasizing “happy Trump” over “bully Trump.” They hope he can remain calm and focused on policy, especially when discussing sensitive topics such as his legal battles or past controversies.

One key challenge for Trump will be tackling questions about abortion, a topic that has become increasingly divisive, even within his own base. His position has been inconsistent in recent months, and the debate will be his chance to clarify where he stands on the issue. His advisers are also focusing on how he can pin the current administration’s economic challenges, including inflation and immigration issues, on Harris, casting her as an extension of Biden’s unpopular policies.

A Battle for the Swing Vote

Both Harris and Trump know that this debate is not just about scoring points with their loyal supporters—it’s about winning over the undecided voters, particularly those who feel disillusioned by the current economic and political climate. Harris plans to focus on Trump’s wealthy background, painting him as a rich man who looks out for other wealthy people rather than the working class. This populist message is designed to appeal to those who are struggling with rising costs and economic instability.

Trump, meanwhile, hopes to recreate a moment similar to Ronald Reagan’s famous 1980 debate question: “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?” His strategy will be to tie Harris to President Biden’s administration, particularly its handling of the economy, public safety, and immigration, areas where voters have expressed dissatisfaction. Trump’s camp believes that if he can make voters associate Harris with these issues, it could swing the undecided vote in his favor.

Both teams understand that the debate is about more than just policy—it’s about perception. Harris wants to come across as cool-headed, knowledgeable, and presidential, while Trump’s team is pushing for him to display the charm and confidence that helped him win in 2016.

What’s at Stake?

This debate represents a defining moment for both candidates. For Harris, it’s her chance to show the country that she’s ready for the highest office. For Trump, it’s a moment to prove that he can still capture the nation’s attention and sway undecided voters despite his legal troubles and controversial past. With high stakes and very different preparation styles, both candidates are aiming to deliver a performance that could alter the trajectory of their campaigns.

The debate promises to be a critical turning point in the race, and both camps are treating it as such. Harris’s detailed and focused rehearsals signal her desire to present a polished image, while Trump’s more relaxed, conversational approach suggests he is confident in his ability to command the stage.

Episode 6 recap for True Detective: Night Country’s Season 4

Episode 6 recap for True Detective: Night Country’s Season 4

Thankfully, the enormous season finale of True Detective provides us with a ton of explanations, but that final shot remains.

Part 6 of Season 4, Episode 6

Oh no! Danvers’s Force-ghost moment was complete with the required Bill Withers needle drop. I’m getting ahead of myself, though. Writing this recap has not been easy, and not simply because the sixth and final episode of True Detective Night Country featured about three billion things.Really, I’m a little depressed! This implies that I must bid you farewell. When I’m in the middle seat on an airplane, who will console me? See my wildly incorrect Carcosa theory? Just because I dubbed The Office’s Benihana episode a little bit racist doesn’t mean you have to call me a “white, liberal, millennial with a quota left to fill in the virtue signaling department” in the comments section. This is my farewell, unless you want me to start sending you recaps of the other show I watch, The Bachelor, with the same kind of fervor. Let me now wipe away my tears and begin this recap. They are necessary for some heavy lifting. Let’s go over the very fundamental beats of the finale, mostly in relation to the resolution of the Tsalal case, before we focus on a few plot aspects. The paranormal shenanigans and the Peter Prior side story can wait until later.Raymond Clark is still alive! Navarro and Danvers discover, during their exploration of the ice caverns, that Clark and his cronies—we no longer approve of the Tsalal scientists—built a second laboratory beneath their main headquarters. It was under the ice the whole time. In one swift motion, our heroes tie Clark up in a chair and solve the majority of the case. This is Tsalal’s officialTM research explanation, according Clark: “We were digging for the DNA of a microorganism contained in the permafrost, which could potentially save the world.” Yes, Jan.For the record, Clark graciously gives this nod to season one: “We are all trapped in a flat circle called time.”For the time being, let’s continue with the study before moving on to Annie K. As it happens, Silver Sky is not solely to responsible for Ennis’s pollution problems. Through some perspiring explanation from Clark, we discover that Tsalal purposefully contaminated the Ennis water supply. Apparently, the “solution from the mine softens the permafrost,” to use Mr. Clark once more, which made it possible for them to “extract the DNA with much less damage.” Although I’m not really sure what that implies, it sounds really sinister! We can put the Silver Sky storyline away safely. (However, ignore the Tuttle connection, as it never yields a real reward.)Annie slain by those thugs! Annie discovered that Tsalal was poisoning Ennis when she was dating Clark. Thus, she ruined their study. Everything. The scientists executed her for it one day, deep in the ice cave laboratory. Despite the rumors that he liked her, Clark completes the task.Congratulations to all of the supporters who have backed the winning crab-factory notion. Earlier in the season, Danvers and Navarro asked two employees of the nearby crab plant, Bee and Blair, about the spiral symbols. Indeed, they took care of Tslal’s janitorial needs as well. While Bee was sweeping the floor during one shift at the laboratory, she noticed water seeping into the ground. After discovering the hatch and exploring the subterranean station, she concluded that Tsalal was responsible for Annie’s death. What takes place after that? Night Country really does blow this opportunity to hell and back. Why not play Shania during the Tsalal beatdown montage? In the dead of night, Bee collects a troop of Iñupiat women and invades Tsalal. Believing Annie has risen from the grave to murder them (that’s our “she’s back” justification!), Clark buries himself behind the hatch and keeps it closed. After forcing the scientists to remove their clothes and walk till they freeze to death, the women march them outdoors and lead them into the wilderness. As Bee tells Danvers and Navarro about what happened that night, she says something very wise: “I guess she ate their fuckin’ dreams from the inside out and spit their frozen bones.” And what are the thoughts of our investigators on this? To put it simply, it’s a Wheeler scenario. Annie received justice from Bee and her team immediately prior to the start of episode 1.(Excessive? Overindulgence.) I acknowledge that last week I snapped at the poor guy. Regarding the last scene in episode 5, many devoted readers (including my colleagues at Esquire) corrected me, saying that Hank was not going to kill Danvers as Peter Prior had said. My response? Hank never would have shot either of them, in my opinion.Having said that, we don’t really get the sort of resolution I was looking for—a final act of redemption for the child. Almost the whole episode is devoted to Prior tidying up (sometimes literally) his own mess. He proceeds to clorox the hell out of Danvers’s house, mends his relationship with the least amount of work possible, and has a pleasant hangout with Rose during which they dispose of his father’s body jointly, among other things, in this episode. While Danvers and Navarro solved the Tsalal case, Night Country brilliantly addressed a ton of plot lines, but sending Prior to the bench like he’s Klay Thompson? Given that the character was already among Night Country’s least strong players, it didn’t seem like the best use of her.In regards to Danvers and Navarro, where do we even begin? They essentially recreate the BEEF conclusion throughout the entire show. You can do this without using spiral emojis, Brady. Take a deep breath. Danvers tries to get some sleep after the investigators take the SparkNotes from Clark, and Navarro observes the man. Unwise decision. The electricity goes out during the course of the night, and it appears like Navarro lets Clark run outdoors and perish in the storm. Danvers gives Navarro a hard time. “I am not forgiving,” she screams as Navarro mentions her son Holden. “You understand?” ) Danvers then tries to go back to sleep, saying, “It’s time for her beauty sleep!”Who will venture into night country next, then? Navarro is it. She goes back to her fantasy land in the desert, where she may dwell forever, but Danvers dashes outdoors and tumbles into the ice. Navarro extracts her. They finally have a heart-to-heart encounter while Danvers is recovering. Danvers inquires as to what Holden told Navarro in the afterlife. Navarro says, “Holden says he sees you.” I don’t have to explain how powerful this statement is, but let me say it anyway: Throughout the series, Holden—who looked to have died in an automobile accident—has made appearances for both Navarro and Danvers. With Foster and Kali Reis at their most powerful, this feels incredibly healing. When Holden sees his mother, she at last accepts that the deceased can communicate. For Navarro, it feels the same kind of liberating. Although this is most evident in episode 6, Navarro battled spiritualism the whole season. Rose warns her not to conflate mental health problems with her views. Danvers declares categorically that any discussion of the undead is nonsense. However, as episode 6 progresses, so does Navarro’s ambition to move forward. She wishes to pursue whatever is named Julia and her mother. Navarro finds calm when Danvers welcomes her and allows her to venture into the depths of Ennis.Ennis finally sees daylight again at the end of the episode. Navarro moves out of her house without alerting Danvers, leaving behind Holden’s plush polar bear and the video of Clark’s confession. Another moment of season 1 nostalgia follows as Danvers summarizes the case in front of a camera and a few police officers. (She’s only missing the beer from Lone Star!) It’s our assumption that she revealed Clark’s confession to the public. The last picture? Navarro walks outside to join Danvers as they relax on her porch. “This is Ennis,” Danvers introduces himself. “Nobody really leaves.” It is unclear to us if Navarro actually remained in Ennis or if she killed herself in the woods, just like Julia and her mother did. It’s a lovely moment, so I’ll let your imaginations run wild here. I want to end it there for the time being.I swear, the final needle-drop suggestion I have is vitamin C. Issa López and the entire Night Country cast, crew, and creative team deserve a lot of credit for their outstanding contribution to the True Detective canon. Zombies, the father of Rust Cohle, a superb performance by Jodie Foster, and a breakthrough performance by Kali Reis. Sure, Night Country wasn’t flawless, but it also won’t have the same impact on television history as a season one. However, it never had to get to the height of McConaughey. Like Danvers, Night Country posed the appropriate queries and provided the appropriate answers. Whether you like it or not, Lopez wrapped up the Tsalal case, scripted a happy ending for Danvers and Navarro’s romance, and left the supernatural aspect of it all (kind of) unresolved.Credit of information: This in depth article originally published by respected “Esquire”

“True Detective” recap for Season 4, Episode 6: Tales Are Tales

With a lot of answers and a hint of mystery, the season finale left a lot unsettled in True Detective

Part 6 of Season 4, Episode 6

The mundane but necessary task of providing an explanation for occurrences that were once tantalizingly unfathomable is one of the challenging aspects of a ghost story such as “True Detective: Night Country.” For example, it is more unsettling to picture a paranormal force transforming scared scientists into an Arctic “corpsicle” than it is to find out that they were taken over by a vigilante group of Indigenous women enforcing justice. This is the risk that the show’s creator, Issa López, has been courting throughout the season by blending eerie hallucinations, hidden traumas, and cryptic symbols with procedural features. It would have to crash land in order to unlock the practical mysteries that confronted Navarro and Danvers. The accomplishment of this uneven but captivating conclusion is that Lopez manages to have her cake and eat it, too. She’s not prepared to sell out the spiritual and psychological unrest that’s exclusive to this place, but she does have answers to the big whodunit questions surrounding the deaths of Annie K. and the scientists. The most powerful aspect of “Night Country” has always been how it portrays Ennis, Alaska, as the furthest northern frontier of humanity—a border hamlet on the brink of extinction. A number of times, including a couple in the epilogue, a character seemed on the verge of vanishing into thin air, much like Werner Herzog’s insane penguin in “Encounters at the End of the World.”The major disclosures here begin even before the credits roll, when Danvers and Navarro enter the ice cave system during a storm that appears to be even more powerful than Ennis’s. However, López is still hesitant to give up the cunning that has been such a crucial component of the mystery: Navarro leaves the group as they proceed into the caverns, believing she “hears” Annie guiding her to the correct location. That’s a sixth sense at work, not just the gut feelings of an investigator. Furthermore, López confirms the moment when the two find the hidden lab where Annie was killed.Danvers and Navarro had worked hard to make the connection between Annie’s case and the dead scientists, from the romantic relationship between Annie and Raymond Clark to the dubious financial arrangement between the mine and the lab, which required assistance in fine-tuning its pollution numbers. They get their wish when they locate the subterranean facility and apprehend Raymond, though the specifics are a little unexpected. It turns out that the mine’s heavy pollution helped soften the permafrost, which aided the lab’s multiyear quest to harvest DNA from a bacterium in the ice. After learning about the project from Raymond’s notes, Annie attempted to obliterate the research, which resulted in repeated stabbings by Lund and the other scientists.Ironically, despite their intense investigation into the case, Danvers and Navarro are not the first to find out what happened to Annie. As we reported last week, Hank had moved Annie’s body at Kate’s request after she assured him that she would use her political contacts to get him the position of police chief. However, later in the episode, Danvers concludes that there must be proof of someone attempting to enter from the top based on Raymond’s statement about “holding the hatch” while his fellow scientists were being attacked. This brings her to an Indigenous caretaker who found the secret laboratory, deduced the scientists’ intentions, and enforced the law herself. When seen as a staged sequence, the flashback to the scientists’ vigilante attack looks a little unrealistic—too drastic an action for regular women to undertake. However, considering the conspiratorial cozy relationship between the mine and the government, as well as the animosity for Native Americans who have been paying the highest price for profits, Lopez has done a good job setting the foundation to make it seem realistic. Even Navarro and Danvers, two formidable women in the legal field, are forced to acknowledge that they cannot have faith that justice will be served for Annie. Ultimately, one of their own was involved in the murder’s cover-up.Ultimately, as Navarro puts it, “Stories are stories,” particularly in Ennis where it appears that the most of the action takes place behind closed doors. Danvers believes she has the right to utilize the official narrative to clear the women accountable for the abstract artwork that melted on the center ice, given that Kate and Connelly had the audacity to brush off the scientists’ demise as a “weather event.” Not to mention the stillbirths the mine had caused their community, the same deception that had been used to hide a conspiracy would now be used to show pity to Indigenous people who had lost one of their own. However, the issue of coping with everything remains. In this episode, Peter cleans up a murder scene. Rose has the kindness to make him turn aside as she pierces his lungs to keep him from floating while assisting him in slipping his father’s corpse into the water. On the other hand, she gives him no consolation when she says that “what comes after: forever” rather than the worst part is finished. That stain will be on his conscience. Danvers will always remember her son. Navarro might or might not go down her sister’s terrible path.Ennis, a community that, in Danvers’s words, “was here long before the mine, long before APF, long before Alaska was named Alaska,” is finally the subject of “Night Country”‘s finale. Raymond bemoans the idea that “time is a flat circle” in a very corny reference to the first season. He claims that Annie has been hiding in the caverns since before she was born and will do so until they all pass away. Lopez maintains that Ennis is a site where ghosts communicate with the living, either through feverish hallucinations or residual remorse that grows in the shadows like a mushroom, even after tying up all the loose ends.

“There is never really a departure,” Danvers claims. That is both a blessing and a curse.Credit of information: This in depth article originally published by respected “New York Times”

Donald Trump’s New York fraud ruling struck right where it hurts the most

February 17, 2024 hottopicharbor.com Blog 4

Donald Trump New York fraud ruling struck right where it hurts the most.

The most recent legal setback for Donald Trump strikes at the core of his being, challenging his entire persona. He has been marketing himself for decades as a brilliant businessman who succeeded in one of the most competitive cities in the world.

That image—always linked to New York deal-making and strengthened by unrelenting self-promotion—launched him into global prominence and enabled him to remake himself as the president of the United States and a reality TV star. However, Mr. Trump’s entire narrative is called into question by Judge Arthur Engoron’s decision in a civil fraud case, which is connected to the inflating of property values and falsifying on financial statements to secure better loan conditions. Rather, it portrays him as a phony and deals a severe damage to his money and business empire. One time, Donald Trump said that the power of the mind can overcome any challenge. But what a barrier that is.

The ruling substantially restricts the Trump Organization’s capacity to conduct business in New York. For a period of three years, he has been prohibited from holding any directorships, and his company is also unable to obtain loans from financial institutions that are registered with the city during that time.A massive $355 million (£282 million; €329 million) financial penalty has been imposed against him; when interest is included, the amount rises to almost $450 million, well exceeding his available funds. His company will remain under independent oversight, with a different independent director of compliance approving significant business choices.

One possible silver lining for the outgoing president and Republican front-runner could be that the Trump corporation avoided the corporate death penalty by having its business licenses revoked. For many years, Mr. Trump has been able to move beyond scandals and legal difficulties that may inflict irreversible harm to others. In fact, he has been dubbed to as Teflon Don because nothing seems to cling to him.

John Gotti, the mob boss, was the former owner of this nickname following his high-profile acquittals in the 1980s. However, the ruling today suggests that, similar to Gotti, Donald Trump’s good fortune might be running out.The judge, Engoron, took note of the defendants’ history of repeated and persistent fraud as well as Mr. Trump’s lack of regret. He claimed that the instances of fraud at the organization spanning more than ten years “leap off the page and shock the conscience” in this particular instance.

He claimed, however, that the defendants were unable to acknowledge their mistakes and wrote, “Their complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological.”Not unexpectedly, Mr. Trump has a totally different perspective. Rejecting the idea that he should face consequences for his deception, he claims to have created a “perfect company” and the banks were fairly compensated. He keeps saying, devoid of proof, that elite Democrats are merely using his legal battles as a ruse to prevent him from winning the presidency.

Mary Trump, the estranged niece of Mr. Trump, believes that the judge’s decision means the Trump family heritage is over. “Today is an emotional day, but one thing is for certain: the Engoron decision is absolutely devastating for Donald,” she posted to social media.Mr. Trump always envisioned himself amid Manhattan’s skyscrapers, having grown up the son of a real estate developer whose ventures included middle-class apartment buildings in the boroughs of Staten Island, Queens, and Brooklyn.

A seven-year building boom from 1976 to 1983, which included the Trump Tower, cemented his position as New York’s most powerful real estate developer. He implied that he had already escaped his father at the age of 37 when he told the New York Times in 1983, “Not many sons have been able to escape their fathers.”

It’s also true that for a young developer with his aspirations, the decade of excess and greed in the 1980s was prosperous.Trump Tower’s prominent placement on Fifth Avenue helped to establish Donald Trump’s reputation. After establishing his notoriety, he signed his name to all of his projects.

However, Donald Trump filed for multiple corporate bankruptcies in the early 1990s and almost lost everything.

During this time, Mr. Trump and his business collaborated with Rich Herschlag, the top engineer in the Manhattan Borough President’s office, on the Riverside South project, which involved redeveloping an abandoned train yard on the Upper West Side.According to him, it took “everything or damn close to everything” for Donald Trump to establish himself as a prosperous real estate developer and, in particular, to create an empire based on his father’s history.

“To watch it gutted and decimated, I can’t image that’s anything less than an emotional horror,” he stated to the BBC.It’s still unclear how Mr. Trump plans to pay the roughly half a billion dollars he owes, and whether selling any properties or ventures to raise the money will be necessary. Forbes values his vast New York real estate empire at $490 million, but he owns numerous other properties across the nation, including hotels, golf courses, condos, and even a winery.

He intends to file an appeal against the punishment, which will halt the ruling until a higher court has had a chance to consider the matter.

However, he still needs to deposit the entire sum within 30 days or obtain an expensive bail if he wants to avoid paying the fine or having his personal assets taken while the appeal procedure is ongoing. The former president would consider it an embarrassment to sell any of his valuable real estate in Manhattan, and he would not make this decision lightly.

Regardless of whether Donald Trump is able to bounce back from this financial setback, the result is certain to severely damage his wealth.

It is certainly a major loss for the ruling class in the city where he attained prominence despite constantly feeling like an alien. And when it comes to New York real estate, Mr. Trump has mocked no one more than the “loser” for more than 60 years.Credit of information: This in depth article originally published by respected “BBC”

The Russian politician Alexei Navalny, who resisted Putin to the very end, passed away in custody

Moscow — The most well-known member of the Russian opposition, Alexei Navalny, passed away at the age of 47 in a distant Russian prison.

The Federal Penitentiary Service in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, which is located above the Arctic Circle, announced Navalny’s passing on Friday.

Navalny “felt unwell” following a walk in the jail yard, according to a statement from the prison administration, and he quickly lost consciousness. Emergency medical personnel’s attempts to revive him “failed to give positive results.”Due to his years of criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin, Navalny was serving a lengthy prison sentence for a variety of offenses, including extremism.

Putin has been notified about Navalny’s passing, according to Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Kremlin. He stated the reason of death is being investigated by jail medical staff.

Reactions from all over the world quickly came in. Navalny’s “death in a Russian prison and the fixation and fear of one man only underscores the weakness and rot at the heart of the system that Putin has built,” according to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. This is Russia’s fault.”There have long been worries about Navalny’s security and well-being while there.

According to his family and supporters, Navalny was forced to lengthy and harsh periods of solitary confinement by officials, who allegedly did this to keep him from accessing outside resources and to continually deny him medical care. It was believed in April by a representative of his Anti-Corruption Foundation in Washington, D.C., that Navalny was progressively being poisoned while incarcerated.

However, a video from Russia’s independent SOTA news agency seems to capture Navalny appearing happy and healthy during a court appearance the day before he passed away. Navalny took part through a video transmission.Serving a 19-year prison term for charges of extremism, embezzlement, and fraud, Navalny’s sentencing was widely perceived as a form of retaliation by the Kremlin for his political involvement.

Over the course of more than ten years, Navalny, a fierce opponent of President Putin, gained widespread support for his campaigns, which channeled public fury over corruption at the highest levels of government and advanced the idea that Russians could one day live differently.

He opposed Putin’s increasingly oppressive leadership and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine even from his prison cell.

In fact, the opposition leader revealed plans to mobilize Russians against Putin in the run-up to the March presidential elections in the days leading up to his disappearance in December. On June 4, 1976, Navalny was born in a village outside of Moscow.

Originally trained as a lawyer, he gained notoriety by trying to incite shareholder uprisings at Russia’s embattled state enterprises.

Later, he became the anti-government protesters’ breakout political hero. A strong orator, he famously denounced the 2011 parliamentary elections as “the party of crooks and thieves” in order to criticize the faulty process.

Putin’s subsequent crackdown on demonstrators demonstrated his will to maintain control over Russian politics, even as the Kremlin managed varying degrees of political rivalry.Despite fending off an embezzlement conviction generally perceived as a Kremlin tactic to undermine his influence with voters, Navalny was permitted to run for mayor of Moscow in 2013. Yet, he came in second, almost sending the contest into a runoff with the candidate personally selected by the Kremlin, all thanks to an enthusiastic street campaign.

When Navalny attempted to run against Putin for the presidency in 2018, the Kremlin took fewer chances. Despite a court ruling that disqualified him, Navalny continued with his covert campaign, opening offices around the country and outlining his political platform. In an interview at the time, Navalny told NPR, “I want to live in a normal country and refuse to accept any talk about Russia being doomed to be a bad, poor, or servile country.”

“I want to live here, and I can’t tolerate the injustice that for many people has become routine.”Even from the political sidelines, Navalny’s relaxed manner, refined by a sense of humor fed by the internet, stood in sharp contrast to Putin’s haughty demeanor.

During his lectures, Navalny would frequently interject lines from his favorite television shows, such as Rick and Morty the animated series or The Wire on HBO.

In videos, his go-to greeting was “Hey, it’s Navalny!” before he would criticize Putin. It was a hint of what set the two men apart, and it was also, as Navalny’s followers contended, a threat. Even if Navalny was barred from running for office.

Putin exploited the dissatisfaction of older Russians about the fall of the Soviet Union. The optimism of a younger generation that Russia could overcome its oppressive Soviet history was harnessed by Navalny.

Putin infamously attempted to minimize Navalny’s notoriety by declining to even mention his name in public; Navalny parodied this move with his trademark wit in an Instagram bio: “Aforementioned individual, This gentleman, another politician, and other activists Personas that were referenced.

Putin used word salads to avoid saying Navalny’s name aloud in any of the statements. However, Navalny’s opponents extended beyond the Kremlin. Early in his political career, he participated in Russian nationalist groups on several occasions, claiming that the opposition needed their help to succeed.

Some liberals in Russia never did forgive him. The official media called him a “fascist.”

Navalny, who was banned from appearing on Russian national television, became an expert at using social media, especially YouTube, to spread his political message.

When Navalny established the Anti-Corruption Foundation in 2011, he brought together a group of skilled Russians who looked for proof of graft among Russia’s most influential people using public records and, on occasion, the black web.

Navalny oversaw probes that exposed ministers for excessive spending much above their disclosed earnings and, in one case, for using official aircraft to transport their corgis to dog shows. His most well-known movie was a two-hour production released in 2021 that allowed spectators to enter a hidden Black Sea castle that Navalny said Putin had constructed at a cost of more than $1 billion.

When the movie’s viewership reached over 100 million, an oligarch with ties to the Kremlin came forward to claim he had purchased the property as an investment.

Navalny’s fan base was expanding. However, he was also opposed by the Russian elite’s elite.Navalny spearheaded several national demonstrations against Putin and Kremlin favoritism over the years. He was arrested numerous times, as were his followers; in 2011 alone, he was taken into custody fifteen times.

However, as Navalny’s popularity increased, especially among younger Russians, so did the dangers to his safety.

He was exposed to a chemical substance by an attacker in May 2017 to the point where he almost lost sight in one eye.

Then, on a journey from Siberia to Moscow in August 2020, Navalny passed out. Later, as he was being treated in a coma in Germany, medical professionals discovered that he had blood traces of the Soviet nerve toxin Novichok.Navalny spearheaded several national demonstrations against Putin and Kremlin favoritism over the years. Later, as he was being treated in a coma in Germany, medical professionals discovered that he had blood traces of the Soviet nerve toxin Novichok.Over the course of several months, Navalny recovered and collaborated with reporters to look into the attack, creating yet another sensation.

One of the would-be assassins was fooled by Navalny into admitting that he had been ordered by a Russian security service team to apply poison to Navalny’s underwear.

According to Navalny, it could only have occurred under President Putin’s direction.

The accusation was categorically denied by the Kremlin, which insisted that the strike was improvised.

As Navalny recovered in a foreign hospital, the government reopened an earlier fraud case against him, claiming he had broken his parole.

It seems that the intention behind the move was to keep Navalny in exile. Still, Navalny was determined to go back to Russia. What Navalny referred to as “the happy Russia of the future.”

Son Zakhar, daughter Daria, brother Oleg, and wife Yulia Navalnaya survive Navalny. When Navalny returned to Russia in January 2021, he was jailed right away, which sparked yet another round of rallies around the nation.

After a trial in which Navalny famously called Putin “Vladimir the Poisoner of Underpants” and said that his imprisonment was meant to scare the public, he was promptly sentenced to 2 1/2 years for parole violations.

“Millions and hundreds of thousands of people cannot be imprisoned. Throughout the trial, Navalny expressed, “I sincerely hope that people will increasingly realize this.”

“And once they do — and such a moment will come — this whole thing will fall to pieces because you can’t lock up the whole country.”In 2022, a second fraud trial resulted in the addition of a nine-year concurrent sentence.

While this was going on, officials began dismantling Navalny’s political network, designating the Anti-Corruption Foundation and its participants as “extremist.” Many associates were taken into custody. The remainder escaped overseas or went into hiding.

However, Navalny continued to be active in politics even after being imprisoned.

His predicament is still receiving attention on a global scale: in 2021, he was given a major European human rights prize, and this year, a documentary about him named Navalny took home an Oscar.

In February 2022, Navalny constantly denounced Putin as a lunatic leading a “stupid war” that he would ultimately lose as Russia began its offensive against Ukraine.”We must save our tired, wretched Motherland. Marking his second year in jail, Navalny said on social media in January, “It has been pillaged, wounded, dragged into an aggressive war, and turned into a prison run by the most unscrupulous and deceitful scoundrels.”

Despite the possibility of being arrested, he urged his supporters to oppose the invasion because he continued to believe that if enough Russians were prepared to speak out against it, then things would change.

It was among the most recent reminders of Navalny’s dream for his nation, which was both straightforward and obstinately unattainable in a time of fear and repression. What Navalny referred to as “the happy Russia of the future.”
